Sun times and sun angles by city
Sunrise, sunset, day length, noon sun height and shadow lengths for 12 cities — each with a live sun path diagram. Not here? Every tool takes any address or coordinates you like.

Latitude sets almost everything about how the sun behaves at a location. It fixes how high the sun climbs at noon, how far round the horizon sunrise swings between summer and winter, and how violently day length changes through the year. Two towns at the same latitude see very nearly the same sun, however far apart they are in longitude — the clock times differ, the geometry does not.
That is why this list is spaced out by latitude rather than by population. 12 cities from 26° to 56° cover the range of behaviour you are likely to care about, and the differences between them are large:
| City | Latitude | Longest day | Shortest day | Midsummer noon sun |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| London | 51.5° | 16h 38m | 7h 50m | 62° |
| Birmingham | 52.5° | 16h 50m | 7h 39m | 61° |
| Manchester | 53.5° | 17h 02m | 7h 28m | 60° |
| Edinburgh | 56.0° | 17h 36m | 6h 57m | 57° |
| Miami | 25.8° | 13h 45m | 10h 32m | 88° |
| Houston | 29.8° | 14h 03m | 10h 14m | 84° |
| Los Angeles | 34.1° | 14h 25m | 9h 53m | 79° |
| New York | 40.7° | 15h 06m | 9h 15m | 73° |
| Seattle | 47.6° | 15h 59m | 8h 25m | 66° |
| Perth | -32.0° | 14h 14m | 10h 03m | 81° |
| Sydney | -33.9° | 14h 24m | 9h 54m | 80° |
| Melbourne | -37.8° | 14h 47m | 9h 32m | 76° |
Longest and shortest are sunrise to sunset at the solstices, local time.
Notice how the swing between longest and shortest day widens as you move away from the equator, while the noon sun angle falls. Near the tropics the year is fairly even and the sun passes almost overhead; toward the poles the summer is enormous, the winter barely happens, and a low sun means long shadows for months at a time. That last point is what catches people out when they judge a house or a garden in July.
Your town not listed? It does not need to be. Every tool here takes any address or pair of coordinates, and the same arithmetic runs for all of them — these pages simply save you the typing for some common ones.
